Unveiling the Invisible Universe describes how we observe the universe beyond our home planet.

For thousands of years humans could only observe the light coming from the night sky with their eyes. But in the early 1600s, the invention of the telescope revolutionized our ability to see deeper into the cosmos.
Now there are many sophisticated optical and radio telescopes in operation. There are also observatories in space, able to measure the X-ray and gamma ray radiation that doesn't penetrate earth's atmosphere.
Most recently we have developed detectors of gravitational waves, giving us new insights into some of the most powerful events in the universe.
