Your donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar, thanks to a challenge offered by one of our members, until December 9th.
Founded in 2010 to save the Planetarium from being closed, the Friends of Arlington’s David M. Brown Planetarium (FOAP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that continues to raise funds to improve the Planetarium programs and offerings, and supports Arlington Public Schools in providing enhanced science education in Arlington County.
Donations support the Friends’ annual scholarship and teacher grant programs, science outreach, acquisition of shows, and the purchase and upgrading of equipment. Donations are tax deductible, and 100% of your gift goes directly to supporting its mission.
Our 2023 Giving Tuesday target is to reach $10,000 in donations. Help us reach our goal!
to one or all of the three funds offered by the FOAP:
Unrestricted Donation: General unrestricted funds continue to improve the Planetarium programs and offerings and support Arlington Public Schools in providing enhanced science education in Arlington County. Funds are also used for the acquisition of shows, and the purchase and upgrades of equipment.
David M. Brown Scholarship Fund: The Friends award one scholarship each year to a senior graduating from an Arlington Public School who intends to major in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). David M. Brown was an Arlington native who was an astronaut on the Space Shuttle Columbia. The scholarship is worth $2,000 a year for up to four years ($8,000 in total) while the recipient is making progress towards an undergraduate STEM degree. The Arlington Community Foundation administers the scholarship fund and manages the application process on behalf of the Friends.
Grants for Teachers: The Grants for Teachers Program has been funded by ticket sales for planetarium shows at Friends weekends. Approximately $3,000 per year has been awarded to Arlington teachers in small grants that allow them to attend in-person classes, participate in major educational conferences, and take online courses. The program is administered jointly by the Friends and APS, and 2023 marks the 10th year of our supporting teacher’s professional development.
