Talk by Dr. Heidi Hammel

Oct. 22, 2017, 1:30 p.m.

Heidi Hammel, Executive Vice President of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, will be treating us to a talk entitled “From Hubble to Webb, and Beyond: Exploring with NASA’s Big Space Telescopes”.

Dr. Heidi Hammel, a long-time user of the Hubble Space Telescope, will give an overview of some of its biggest hits. From nearby planets to distant clusters of galaxies that bend the very fabric of space, we will travel the cosmos as seen through the silver eye of Hubble. She will also give a status update on NASA’s next Great Observatory, the James Webb Space Telescope, and provide a brief overview of what she, and others who have guaranteed time on the telescope, plan to do with Webb’s golden mirrors. And to wrap it up, she will share a glimpse of what the astrophysics community is planning for the future: massive telescopes that will dwarf Hubble and use the advanced technology of the Webb telescope.

Astronomer Heidi Hammel is a self-professed Hubble Hugger and long-time Hubble user. She has been profiled by the New York Times and Newsweek Magazine, and was identified as one of the 50 most important women in science by Discover Magazine in 2002.
